Greg R. Barron - biography

A senior marketing, public relations and corporate communications professional for more than 20 years, Greg R. Barron has management, consulting and hands-on experience spanning both the agency and corporate worlds, journalism and business development.

A former Director of Marketing and Communications for Minnesota’s Private Colleges, he began his marketing and communications career as an account supervisor and director of media relations for Hill & Knowlton Public Relations, among the world’s largest and most prestigious public relations consulting firms. There, he served clients, including Fortune 100 companies, with media relations program planning and implementation, executive training, speech writing, and audio-video scriptwriting and production services.

He later founded his own public relations and marketing communications consulting firm, G. R. Barron and Company, based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Serving clients in a wide range of industries, his firm became an early leader in computer-based graphic design, marketing program development, media relations, advertising, as well as website design and production. Under his leadership as president, senior consultant, and creative director, the company enjoyed a reputation for both effectiveness and exceptional client service, and was regularly listed by “Minneapolis/St. Paul CityBusiness” as among the “Top 20” public relations and marketing communication firms in the Twin Cities.

Greg has served large client organizations and small; from new ventures to household names like American Express Financial Advisors, Hewlett Packard Company, Deluxe Corporation, as well as a number of state agencies including the University of Minnesota, where he was a Communications Consulting Fellow.

Greg’s career also includes positions as director of marketing and communications with both privately held and publicly-traded corporations. His “client-side” experience includes development of comprehensive, integrated marketing programs, including advertising, corporate identity, brand management, media and investor relations, and employee communications.

He has been as a guest lecturer at the University of Minnesota’s Department of Mass Communications, a participant in the University’s mentoring program, a speaker on corporate branding and Website development at professional organizations, and the author of professional articles ranging from broadcast production to investor relations.

A former radio and television journalist, he has won more than twenty national journalism awards and is a two-time recipient of the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award for excellence in broadcast journalism. He is also actively involved in radio storytelling and documentary feature production.

Currently engaged in occasional writing and consulting projects–and enjoying semi-retirement–Greg is also active in his community. An Eagle Scout, he has served as a member-at-large of the Northern Star Council of the Boy Scouts of America, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has also served as president of the board of directors of the MacLaren Hill Condominium Association, one of the largest condominium associations in Saint Paul, where he resides reasonably quietly with his motorcycle and the memory of two elderly dogs who he loved dearly.
